Instead of saying the full phrase 批判鬥爭:Pi Pan Dou Zhen, it was shortened into 批鬥:Pi Dou.ĭuring Mao's time, Chinese people were forced to attend many different types of struggle sessions, sometimes consisting of 100,000 people. According to Lin Yu-tang, 批判, v.t., judge (case), give official judgment 鬥爭 :to struggle, a struggle (for supremacy), fight so the whole phrase conveys the message of inciting the spirit of judgment and fighting. A Struggle session ( Chinese: 批鬥大會) was a unique method used by the Mao era Communist Party of China to shape public opinion and to humiliate, to persecute and/or execute political rivals, or so-called class enemies.
